Context
Nautile Production approached me to create a short, educational animation explaining the basics of composting for a general audience. The goal was to communicate the composting process in a way that was not only informative, but also visually accessible and emotionally engaging - especially for viewers unfamiliar with the topic.
The challenge was to balance clarity and warmth: how to visually explain the biological process of composting without it feeling too technical or dry while still maintaining accuracy.
Approach
With the brief and voice-over provided by the client, I was responsible for shaping the entire visual identity from initial concept sketches to full production in illustration, motion and sound.
I decided to start the story with something simple and familiar, like a character taking out the trash, just like we all do without thinking much about it. That everyday action became the spark for a quiet reflection on how much waste we produce and how disconnected we often are from where it goes. Rather than focusing on guilt or data, I introduced composting as a positive, hands-on alternative - something accessible, natural and meaningful.
I continue with a clear storyboard to break down the composting process into simple, digestible steps:
Sorting kitchen waste → Fermentation → Transformation → Enriching the soil.
Each phase is brought to life through soft, organic visuals, hand-drawn textures, warm color tones and smooth animation. Motion is used to guide the viewer intuitively, without relying on heavy narration.
Throughout the animation, a flower petal was used as a fil rouge to connect the viewer’s perspective across different scenes, serving as a visual thread that ties the narrative together.
